  The 5th Annual Substance Use Disorder Symposium is brought to you by the   National Capital Region Pain Initiative at Walter Reed National Military Medical   Center. The Symposium is designed to help clinicians and healthcare teams   prevent, identify, and treat substance use disorders as it requires a multifaceted   approach including education, research, intervention and clinical care.

Motivational Interviewing for Substance Abuse workshop helps provider understand and develop skill on this method of brief client-centered, semi-directive psychological treatment approach that concentrates on improving and strengthening individuals' motivations to change. MI aims to increase an individual's perspective on the importance of change.

Emerging evidence suggests that integrative approaches can target neurocognitive mechanisms to produce significant therapeutic effects on SUDs and prevent relapse. This workshop will review, discuss and practice some of these therapeutic mechanisms that might be applied to intervening in SUDs and preventing relapse.

As we continue to work to make progress with risks related to COVID-19 we continue to also address risks related to opioid safety. This workshop will review key points related to opioid safety, approaches to pain care and integrating strategies for opioid risk mitigation and covid risk mitigation.

This workshop is to present and discuss the stages of a substance use disorder patient through the healthcare system. The goal is to learn to identify aspects of a substance use disorder patient while learning some of the interventions and support within each stage to have positive outcomes for each patient.
